Nuttall's Woodpecker contemplating feeder

Gardening in my yard sure has it's surprises. I went down to cut back some of the brassica's and contemplate my devastated peas with the idea of taking some photos as well, when this darling landed first in my willow and then in the pear.
The photo isn't that great, but then I was pretty excited to see something so striking that I had never seen before.
Another gardening distraction on a chilly but beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Kumquat on a gray day!

Gardening in winter is more than just doing all sorts of chores. For me, it is trying to find something new and interesting to appreciate. On a gray day like this one, I went looking for some winter color now that all the chrysanthemums are gone and the violas etc. aren't blooming yet. I found some Sweet Alyssum, some barely starting to bloom calendulas, and finally turned to the greenhouse...Ah moment...geranimums, lemons and kumquat...saved from the ravages of the freezing weather we have had. The nicest thing is the scent of both the regular geranium and then the scent of the lemon scented one. delicious.
Back out in the yard, I cleaned out the brassica bed, and pruned suckers off of the pear tree.
For the final as the sun finally came out, I redistributed some of the oak leaves that have piled up by the house. More on this later.

First Cauliflower of the season and still growing

New Year's Day 2009...sitting down by the creek in my garden...egrets and cauliflowers, what else to do but start another blog about gardening on Cache Creek with all of the creek side denizens to distract me. It is meditative, creative and exhilarating.
I am a certified Master Gardener, but I take a very intuitive approach to my yard and garden. I hope to use this blog to keep better track of developments both in the yard and on the creek...they are so intertwined in my experience here.
Trying to organize myself on the first day of a new year!!!
